UCA takes home first ever GSC title
TUPELO, Miss. — They say the best things come to those who wait.

On Sunday, the Sugar Bears brought home their first-ever Gulf South Conference Tournament championship in grand fashion, waiting 39:58 to put away the Lady Blazers of Valdosta State 66-65 in an epic affair that featured 15 ties and 14 lead changes.

With 2.3 seconds remaining, UCA’s senior All-American Carone Harris lobbed an inbounds pass over a Valdosta defender to Caronica Randle who gathered herself, went up and let go of the shot game-winning shot.

The final buzzer sounded as the ball fell through the net, and the celebration was on for the Sugar Bears (24-6), who continued their storybook season by claiming their first conference crown and securing the top seed in the NCAA Tournament’s South Regional they will host this weekend.

Sugar Bears goin’ to the ship
all ones
TUPELO, Miss. — In high school everybody always couldn’t wait to get their senior rings.

Now, in college, the same is the case for Carone Harris, Micaela Thomas and Traci Graham.

“The kids want a ring and they want a big ring,” head coach Checola Seals said. “The ring’s getting bigger. After tomorrow we hope we have a nice big ring.”

The Sugar Bears (23-6) advanced to the Gulf South Conference Tournament championship game with an 82-59 thumping of SAU Saturday afternoon and look to win their first GSC Tournament title when they square off against the Lady Blazers of Valdosta State.

“It’s awesome,” Seals said of the win. “I’m happy for the kids. I was worried before the game because the look on their faces was too serious.”

Bears tumble down stretch, lose to UM
TUPELO, Miss. — A series of unfortunate events led to the UCA Bears demise Saturday night in the GSC Tournament.

Montevallo (23-6) knocked off the Bears (22-7) 60-56 in a game that turned into a nail-bitter down the stretch.

The Bears led by as much as eight in the second half, but the Falcons were able to chip away at the lead.

“It happened real quick,” Bears coach Rand Chappell said. “We went from having a cushion to it being anyone’s ball game real fast.”
