Fifty-five new players, new offensive scheme — similar result.

The UCA Bears weren’t horribly affected by the all-new Henderson State Reddies Saturday night as the Bears blew through the Reddies 55-7. Last season UCA beat the old Reddies 55-12.

“We’re a very capable football team when we do things right,” coach Clint Conque said. “I think this team had a resolve about them after the Tennessee-Martin game.”

UCA’s (3-1, 2-0) defense dominated once again, but this week the offense tagged along on the domination train.

Kentrel Rogers led the way offensively, doing a little bit of everything. He had 118 yards rushing on 19 carries, 33 yards receiving on 3 catches and 3 total touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving).

Defensively Quentin Maxfield led the way with 13 tackles, a forced fumble and a sack.

The Bears held Henderson (1-3, 0-2) to 391 total yards (347 passing, 44 rushing), while gaining 549 (347 passing, 202 rushing) themselves.

“I thought the quarterbacks played extremely well,” Conque said. “Chris (Reil) was very sharp in pregame.”

Reil finished 21-of-26 for 207 yards and 3 touchdowns, backup QB Nathan Brown was 8-of-9 for 140 yards and a touchdown.

“I was thinking we were going to have a big dropoff, or a really good game,” Reil said. “I honestly didn’t expect this.”

Reil was a starter for Henderson State his freshman year before transferring. This was Reil’s first start against the Reddies since coming to UCA.

“I really didn’t think about it much all week,” Reil said. “But it started to hit me during the pregame. I think getting the start gave me a little extra motivation.”

Receiver Aaron Fairooz led the Bears with 132 yards on 7 catches and one touchdown.

“I thought the offensive line gave the quarterbacks excellent protection,” Conque said. I thought the kicking game was outstanding again. The coverage was ferocious. But we still missed a couple kicks, and we can’t do that.”

The Bears forced 6 Henderson fumbles, recovered three, and had one interception late in the game. Jasper Johnson picked the pass off and returned it 44 yards before being stopped. He had missed an easy interception earlier in the contest.

Kelvin Horne, Ahmad Brown and Bryan Peoples all came up with recoveries.
UCA opened up the scoring on its first possession. Rogers scored on a sweep to the right with 10:37 left in the first quarter, however the usually sure-footed James Paul missed the PAT and the score was stuck at 6-0.

After converting one fourth down on the Bears next possession when quarterback Chris Reil rumbled five yards just past the sticks, the Bears were forced into another fourth down at the HSU 1. From there, though, Rogers took off through the wrong hole and the Bears turned it over on downs.

After the one turnover the Bears scored on every possession the rest of the half. Reil found freshman receiver Cameron Kinard for a 17-yard touchdown to make it 13-0. Backup quarterback Nathan Brown came in and hit receiver Aaron Fairooz, who blew by his defender with ease on his way to a 65-yard score to make it 20-0 with 8:07 left in the half. After a nice pump fake (and fake reception by Michael Norvell) Reil hit Austin Cade, standing wide open right past the goalline for a 20-yard score to make it 27-0.

Henderson finally scored on the next possession with Dane King going up top for an 80-yard hookup with Donald Bell. But, the Bears weren’t done, Reil found Rogers for an 8-yard hookup with :41 left in the half to put UCA up 34-7.

The Bears scored their first touchdown of the second half when Rogers ended a 3-play, 49-yard drive when he scampered 36 yards to the end zone.

Third-string running back Ross Brown scored the next UCA touchdown from the 1 to make it 48-7. The Bears final score came when second-string back Derrick McKenzie rushed 15 yards for the score.

The Bears will face their toughest test of the season next week when they travel to Valdosta, Ga. to face the defending national champions in Valdosta State.

“Wer’e trying to stay on point, trying to stay on focused, trying to stay grounded.” Conque said. “I really, really like this football team. They love to play the game.”
