The UCA Bears left little doubt who was the
better team on Senior Night on Saturday in a 56-7 massacre of
the Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils in front of 6,582 fans at
Estes Stadium.
“We thought the key would be to
establish the tempo early,” coach Clint Conque said.
“We talked about being focused. But [UAM’s] young
people played hard. We came out inspired. We were pretty
efficient in all three phases of the game.”
The Bears (8-2, 7-1) were efficient. They
tallied 507 yards of total offense, didn’t miss an extra
point, had to punt just once and allowed just one touchdown.
UAM (1-9, 1-8) totaled just 249 yards on the night, most of
them coming late in the game.
Quentin Maxfield and Lance Boykins each led
the Bears with eight tackles. Linebacker Jack Bailey pitched in
six and Leroy Hamilton, Kelvin Horne and Jeremy Pittman all had
five stops.
“Our defensive football is playing
with a lot of confidence right now,” Conque said.
UCA led 42-0 at the half, scoring on all
but one possession. Last week’s Gulf South Conference
player of the week Kentrel Rogers scored first from 22 yards
out with 11:45 left in the quarter. On Rogers third carry he
found the end zone again, this time from 20 yards out to make
it 14-0 with 8:50 left in the quarter.
The Bears scored quickly on their next
series when quarterback Nathan Brown hit Aaron Fairooz for a
72-yard touchdown hookup on the first play of the drive.
Fairooz finished with three catches for 95
yards and two touchdowns. He’s now just 34 yards away
from the UCA record for receiving yards in a season.
The Bears made it 28-0 on their next
possession when Ross Brown scored from 2 yards out for the last
score of the first quarter.
With 9:50 to go in the second Nathan Brown
hit tight end Austin Cade for a 25-yard touchdown to make it
35-0.
Cade finished with four catches for 106
yards and the touchdown.
Fairooz got in the end zone for the final
score of the half with 4:07 left when Chris Reil hit him from
19 yards out.
The Bears ate some clock on its first
possession of the second half and scored with 6:51 remaining in
the third.
Nathan Brown hit fullback Joseph Walker for
a 3-yard score to make it 49-0.
UAM finally got onto the scoreboard with 12:
37 left in the fourth quarter when quarterback Anthony
Rodriguez found Robert Jackson for an 8-yard score.
Ross Brown scored the final touchdown of
the night from 7 yards out with 2:12 left in the game. The
score ended a 10-play, 80-yard drive.
Nathan Brown finished 10-of-12 for 185
yards and three touchdowns. Reil was 8-for-10 for 157 yards and
one touchdown.
Conque said this group of seniors helped
reestablished some pride in UCA’s program.
Thursday the Bears do battle with long-time
rival Arkansas Tech in the Governor’s Football Classic at
Buerkle Field in Russellville.
“We’re getting ready to prepare
for a really good Arkansas Tech game,” Conque said.
“I don’t think it’ll be real tough to get our
guys locked in.”
Sixteen seniors took the field at Estes for
their last regular season home game.
“I’m so appreciative of those
16 seniors,” Conque said. “And to their families
for the trust they had in me and our coaching staff. There are
some outstanding people in that group, some record-setting
players. There will be a huge void in our football program when
they’re gone.”
Conque said his seniors weren’t ready
to call it a career
just yet.
“They’re not satisfied,”
he said. “They’re hungry. They want to get as much
out of this season as they can.”
