The UCA Bears had two practices Tuesday
coach Clint conque was pleases with both workouts, calling
Tuesday a “good day.”
Conque said about 16 players were held out
of the morning session because class and some minor injuries.
Nearly everyone was back for the afternoon session, however.
Receiver Che Jones and cornerback Stephen
Green were both participating in fall camp for the first time
this season. Green is fresh off a transfer from North Carolina
and will be fully dressed out in "a couple of days"
according to Conque. Jones has been having some health
problems, but has them out of his way now and should also be
able to put some pads on later this week.
Even with two practices, the attitude of
the team still seems very positive. The team also appears to be
in pretty good shape at this point of fall drills, there isn't
a whole lot of slacking off during the practices.
After the normal positional drills, group
work and team drills the afternoon practice ended with some
situational work. The first and second string offenses and
defenses went through third down work. The first play of each
series was 3rd and 2, the second was 3rd and six and the next
was 3rd and 10.
"I thought the offense looked good
late," Conque said. "They really came on there at the
end. Third down isn't an easy place to be."
The Bears will only have one practice
session tomorrow. And, much like several of the players,
because of summer school Echo Sports was only able to attend
one practice today too.
Here are some observations from the
afternoon session:
Green is quick. He wasn't
wearing pads and didn't get involved in a whole lot of contact,
but you can tell he's a good athlete. One time he even wanted
to make a tackle, he made contact, but was quickly told to hold
off since he was padless. It's a good thing he'll be on the
field, too, because when he was asked to re-attach a pad to a
tackling sled, he had no idea how to go about it.
Aaron Fairooz dropped a pass today.
It was a sight not seen for a couple of years. But it seemed to
be the only pass he dropped.
Both quarterbacks continue to look
sharp. It's hard to pick out any huge weaknesses in the QBs.
They both look like they can lead the team. But, to give you a
little more of a clue as to who won today's QB battle, we'll go
to Cooley Meter. QB coach Todd Cooley gave a few more
"atta boy"s to Chris Reil today. Nathan Brown was on
point with the deep ball today.
It's been said a number of times,
but the defense is quick. There are some athletes on the
defensive side of the ball, no doubt about that.
Jones was padless, just like Green,
but got a little work and showed off his speed a little bit.
It'll be good to get him in pads to see what he can bring to
the already deep receiving corps.
Garrett Morgan and James Paul have
both looked pretty good in kickoff work. Paul shanked a couple
kicks yesterday, but today put nearly all his kicks out of the
end zone. Morgan is getting good hangtime on his kickoffs and
puts them all right down the middle of the field.
Ronnie Lee is still not back on the
field, but he will be back in action shortly.
