After splitting a two-game series with LSU-Shreveport in Louisiana on Tuesday and demolishing Lemoyne-Owen 15-2 on Thursday in Conway, UCA dropped two of three conference games against Arkansas-Monticello (21-17, 9-6) last weekend at Bear Field.
“We didn’t deserve to win,” Bears coach Doug Clark said. “We didn’t play well this weekend.”
The Bears (22-14, 9-5) are currently third in the Gulf South Conference West Division behind Delta St. and Arkansas Tech.

The Bears scored two runs in each of the first three innings in Game 1 of the series Saturday, taking a 6-2 lead.
But the Boll Weevils’ bats livened with two outs in the fourth inning.
Five consecutive singles by UAM and an error by the Bears led to a three-run inning off Bears starter Jonathan Nichols.
Three more singles and another UCA error enabled the Boll Weevils to score two more runs in the top of the fifth, taking the lead at 7-6.
UAM scored an additional run in each of the seventh and eighth innings.
After the first three innings, the Bears couldn’t do much against Boll Weevils starter Nick Johnson.
Johnson (3-2) gave up only one more hit and no runs after his sketchy start. He picked up the win, pitching a complete game.
Clark was dissatisfied with his team in the later innings of the ballgame.
“We didn’t pitch or hit,” he said. “We couldn’t get much going; we didn’t make adjustments.”
Nichols (5-2) took the loss for the Bears, only throwing 4.2 innings before being relieved by Robbie Daniel. Chris Houk and Roger Lenderman each had two hits for the Bears.
Barrett Ward saw his 19-game hitting streak come to an end in this game, going 0-4.

Brian Post’s 2-run homer down the right field line in the first inning of Saturday’s nightcap was the only offensive production UCA would have all game, but it was all that was needed.
Starter Zach Barnett (6-1) provided six innings of solid pitching to pick up the win for UCA. Barnett gave up only five hits and one run before relinquishing the mound to closer Jake Goodwin, who threw a scoreless inning to pick up his fourth save of the season.
Barnett said he did whatever he had to do to get outs.
“My curveball wasn’t doing very good,” he said. “But I managed to locate my fastball.”
Randy Schrock threw the entire game for the Boll Weevils. Schrock gave up only four hits and two runs but lost his second game of the season.
Besides Post’s 2-3 2 RBI performance, Bubba Dickens and Jonathan Ashworth were the only other Bears to pick up hits.

The Boll Weevils’ offense ravaged through four UCA pitchers, accumulating 14 hits en route to their win in the rubber match of the series Sunday.
“[Our pitchers] had a bad weekend,” Clark said. “But our guys will bounce back.”
Starter Daniel Price (1-2) took the loss for the Bears. Price gave up three runs on five hits in only two innings of work.
UCA couldn’t capitalize on their best opportunity to get back in the game against UAM starter Josh McClain in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ward was hit by a pitch, Mitch Cameron singled and Houk was walked to load the bases with no one out. But as Ashworth flew out to the right fielder, the Bears had only scored one run in the inning.
Houk continued to hit the ball well for UCA, going 3-3. Ashworth and Todd Gossage both went 2-4, and Ward struggled at the plate, ending a hitless series with an 0-3 day.

The game scheduled for Wednesday against Hendrix has been cancelled. UCA will resume play Friday and Saturday in a two game non-conference series against Crichton College.
