TUPELO, Miss. — With time ticking down Southern Arkansas’ Sharonda Davis missed a shot, but was able to snag her own miss and put it back in as time expired to give SAU a 51-49 win over West Florida.

“I had to get in position to get the rebound, that’s what our coaches had been telling us to do the whole game,” Davis said. “After I shot the first one, I followed my shot and was able to get it off.”

Davis said she didn’t know if it would go in, because she couldn’t see the shot because she had faded behind the backboard.

She finished with just 6 points and 6 rebounds. Her teammate Kim Davis finished with 10 points and 18 rebounds in a game where coach Sam Biley stressed rebounding, and his team listened.

The Lady Riders were outrebounded by seven in the first half, but turned the tables in the second when SAU outrebounded UWF by 14.

“We thought if we were able to outrebound them on both ends of the court we would be alright,” Biley said. “We were working extremley hard down the stretch.”

SAU shot just 34.4 percent for the game. In the second half the Lady Riders were able to hold UWF to 30.8 percent shooting after they had shot 46.4 percent in the first half.

“We thought our defense was solid,” Biley said. “We were working hard on both ends.”

Biley said that Valerie Turner was able to shut down UWF’s key player, Michelle Gibson.

“Gibson was so quick,” he said. “Turner did a good job tireing her out.”

Gibson finished with 21 points to lead the Lady Argos. She was the only UWF player in double figures. Melissa Nafzger finished with 10 rebounds for the Lady Argos.

Shayla Canady led the Lady Riders with 15 points.

The Lady Riders will play the winner of tonight’s final game between Central Arkansas and Montevallo.

Kim Davis had just one thing to say about the Lady Riders victory.
