TUPELO, Miss. — The Delta State
Statesmen sewed up their spot in Sunday’s championship
game on Saturday when they rallied to knock off West Georgia
70-65.
The Statesmen trailed at half time and
most of the second half before turning it around and taking the
lead away from SUWG.
“That was an emotional half for
me,” DSU coach Steve Rives said. “We challenged the
team. Then we finally got in the matchup zone and got the lead
back.”
The Braves were forced to take bad shots
because of DSU’s matchup zone and that allowed for the
Statesmen to score some tranistion points.
When Delta State took the lead the Braves
were still in it, but were unable to hit the shots they needed.
“I thought we got the shots we
wanted, but we couldn’t make them,” SUWG coach Ed
Murphy said. “It’s as simple as that.”
Delta State was led by Jeremy Richardson
with 17 points, Marlon McCoy had 12 and Corey Johnson finished
with 10.
Majestic Mapp finished with 19 points to
lead the Braves. Darnell Miller finished with 17 and Ryan Mabry
added 12.
The Statesmen will face the No. 1 from the
East in tomorrow’s final against Montevallo at 2:45.
